Pietrasanta
|
Pietrasanta is the historical capital of Versilia. Considered a center of international prestige for the processing of the marble and the bronze, Pietrasanta has now the aspect of a true art center, with numerous art galleries, temporary exhibitions and a rich historical center.
Here we find in fact the Cathedral's square, where the Cathedral of San Martino (13th-14th centuries) stands, in Romanesque-Gothic style, and the deconsecrated church of Sant'Agostino (14th century), in Romanesque style with annexed bell tower in baroque style, now seat of exhibitions, where important sculptures and pictures can be admired. Beside the building there is the cloister.
On the square there are also: the Civic Tower in Gothic style, the column of the Marzocco (16th century) near the fountain, the palace Panichi Carli, and the monument to Leopoldo II. Palazzo Moroni (16th century) is seat of the archaeological museum in which we can see numerous objects of the age of the Etruscan people.
The city was defended by a net of tunnels, besides other defensive works as the walls you can see from the public square: there is a path that allows to reach them, and finishes to the Rocca di Sala, from which you can admire the panorama of the Versilia coast, from Viareggio to Forte dei Marmi and, if the sky is clear, the islands of Tuscany and the Liguria coast.
