Piazza Maggiore
|
Piazza Maggiore is the main public square of Bologna, where the most important buildings of the medieval city are located.
The area that now we know as Piazza Maggiore developed in the 13th century, when the people of Bologna felt the need to have a space for the market, but it was only in the 15th century that thePiazza assumed the current shapes.
Among the buildings that surround Piazza Maggiore we remember the Palace of the Podestà, to north, that is the most ancient palace because it dates back to 1201; it is adorned by the Torre dell'Arengo, that ringing its bell called the people. To this building was later added Palazzo Re Enzo. The public square is closed to the west by the Palace d'Accursio, a monumental architectonic complex of the 14th century, currently seat of the Municipality of Bologna, the Communal Collections of Art and of the Morandi Museum, while to south there is the evocative unfinished facade of the Basilica of San Petronio, an example of Italian Gothic style, begun in 1390 and never completed.
Its dimensions and the beautiful frame of historical buildings made Piazza Maggiore the ideal place for public manifestations and shows.
