Bologna
|
Bologna is the main city of Emilia-Romagna and obliged passage between the north and the south of the peninsula. It was an Etruscan, then Gaulish and Roman city. During the Middle Ages the city reached the apex of its power and inside its walls was founded in the 11th century the first University of the world.
The medieval shapes of the historical center are still very visible; the city offers numerous testimonies of its past, as the town-walls that surround the historical centre, dated back to 1300, and with 12 doors of which nine are perfectly conserved. The symbols of Bologna surely are the two towers, that of Asinelli and the Garisenda, a monumental complex that dates back to the communal age, around 1100.
Great importance has moreover the ecclesiastical architecture, whose main churches of the 13th and the 14th century are connected to the spread of the religious orders and are dedicated to San Domenico, San Francesco, San Giacomo and San Martino. In the same period starts to rise the monumental complex of Piazza Maggiore that comprises the palace of the Podestà and Re Enzo, the Communal Palace and the Basilica of San Petronio, begun in 1390. Precious examples of baroque art are the churches of San Paolo and San Salvatore and the cathedral of San Pietro, that has Romanesque origins.
