Basilica of Saint Mary of Health
|
The Church of Santa Maria della Salute (Saint Mary of Health), commonly known simply as the Salute, is placed scenically at a narrow finger of land which lies between the Grand Canal and the Canale della Giudecca.
Its history begins in 1630, when a wave of the plague assaulted Venice, that killed nearly a third of the population.
At the end of the epidemic, the Venetians decided to built a church, as a thanks to the Virgin Mary for the relief from the plague.
The church stands out on the Venice landscape because of its white colour and the shapes of its architecture: it is considered one of the best examples of the baroque architecture in Venice.
Inside, there are important works of art, but there main one is the high altar, where is located a sculpture representing the Virgin with the Child, placed side by side by two symbolic characters: Venice, represented as a noble woman, is kneeling, imploring, on the other side there is the Plague, represented as an old woman, runs away, chased by an angel; it is the symbol of the Salute defending the city.
Yearly, on 21st November, is celebrated the Festa della Madonna della Salute: there is a parade from San Marco to the Salute, crossing the Grand Canal on a specially constructed pontoon bridge.
