Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta
|
The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, in the center of the Piazza dei Miracoli, is the medieval cathedral of Pisa, masterpiece of the Romanesque style.
The building, as the bell tower, has sinked in the ground, and some cracks in the walls are visible. It was begun in 1063-1064; but the current shapes of the building are the result of repeated restorations in different times.
The rich external decoration comprises marbles, mosaics and numerous bronze objects. Beautiful also the ancient bronze doors. The interior is covered with white and black marble, it has a golden wooden ceiling and brings the coat of arms of the Medici family. The great mosaic of the apse, representing Christ, was completed by Cimabue in 1302, and survived the fire in 1595.
On the external wall, to the left of the facade, in front of the Camposanto, there is a marble block of roman origin, on which we can see a series of black small holes. According to the legend they are the signs left by the Devil when he climbed the church trying to stop the construction, and so they are called unghiate del Diavolo (scratches of the Devil).
