Uffizi Gallery

The Palazzo degli Uffizi was designed and built by Giorgio Vasari, the court painter and architect. Work began in 1560 and was completed in 1580 under the direction of Bernardo Buontalenti. The horseshoe-shaped palace extends from the River Arno (its shortest side overlooks the river) to Piazza della Signoria. It is connected to Palazzo Vecchio by a bridge over Via della Ninna and to Palazzo Pitti through the Corridoio Vasariano.
This clever architectural solution was dreamed up by Vasari to please Cosimo I, who wanted a prestigious and imposing
site for the Grand-Duchy's administrative offices (Uffizi).
This is one of the most famous museums of paintings and sculpture in the world. Its collection of Primitive and
Renaissance paintings comprises several universally acclaimed masterpieces of all time, including works by Giotto, Simone Martini, Piero della Francesca, Fra Angelico, Filippo Lippi, Botticelli, Mantegna, Correggio, Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Michelangelo and Caravaggio.
German, Dutch and Flemish masters are also well represented with important works by Dürer, Rembrandt and Rubens.
