Palazzo Vecchio
|
Palazzo Vecchio was built up between 1299 and 1314 for giving a worthy seat to the Priors of the Arts, the representatives of the professional corporations that held the Government of the city in 1282.
Called in origin Palace of the Lordship, name of the main organism of the Republic, has assumed in the centuries various names. The name Vecchio (old) was assumed in 1565 when the court of Cosimo Medici moved in the “new” Palazzo Pitti. The tower of Palazzo Vecchio was built towards 1310 when the body of the palace nearly was finished.
On the right corner of the façade a profile is carved: the origins are not known, but the popular tradition indicates Michelangelo as the author; but it is probably only a legend.
Inside the palace accommodates a museum that exposes, among the others, works of Agnolo Bronzino, Michelangelo Buonarroti, Giorgio Vasari and many other artists.
