Parco del Valentino
|
The Parco del Valentino is a famous public park, situated along the river Po, between the monumental bridge Re Umberto I and the bridge Principessa Isabella, and is very close to the city center. It has a surface of approximately 500.000 m²; it is not the largest park of the city: the largest one is the Parco della Pellerina, that has an extension of 837.220 m², but the Valentino is surely the main one, more central and full of people.
This park was created in 1630; in 1864 it was partially redesigned by the French architect Jean-Pierre Barillet-Deschamps, with a better arrangement of avenues, small woods and bloomed valleys. In occasion of the Expo 1884 was built the so-called medieval village, that is the reconstruction of a village that shows the main architectonic characters of Piedmont during the Middle Ages.
Today inside of the park you can visit the Medieval Village, with its castle, and the Castle of the Valentino, the most famous construction of the park: a wonderful castle built at the beginnings of 1500, but completely restored in the 17th century.
