Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist
|
The Cathedral of Turin is dedicated to John the Baptist, patron saint of the city, and it is the only church of the city with a Renaissance style, adorned by a beautifulst facade in white marble from Carrara.
On the left side there is the bell tower of Sant'Andrea, with romanesque shapes, built in 1470; the interior of the Cathedral is today decorated by numerous chapels, in which worked many artists and decorators.
In 1649 was realized an enlargement of the church with the aim to create a worthy atmosphere for the conservation of the Shroud of Turin (called in italian Sacra Sindone), the linen cloth that was placed on the body of Jesus Christ at the time of his burial. Today the chapel of the Sindone is closed because there is a restoration in progress; the Shroud is cyclically exposed to the public, the next display will be in April 2010.
