Basilica of Superga
|
Superga is the name of a hill that rises to east of Turin, on which is located a splendid Basilica, wanted by the king Victor Amadeus II as thanks to the Virgin Mary, after he defeated the French army who besieged Turin in 1706.
The Basilica of Superga has a big baroque dome and two beautiful bell towers. In Superga are buried some members of the House of Savoy: they are buried in a richly decorated crypt. Among the personages buried in the Reali Tombe dei Savoia we remember Victor Amadeus II, Charles Emmanuel III, Charles Albert and Victor Emmanuel I.
Outside of the chapel of Superga, on the large square to right of the church, there is a monument dedicated to the King Humbert I, killed in 1900. In the posterior part of the basilican complex there is a memorial stone, for the so-called tragedy of Superga: on May 4th 1949 an airplane that transported the football team of Turin, Torino, crashed down on the hill and all the passengers died. The walls destroyed in the impact are still visible, as it has been decided not to rebuilt them.
