Ghiffa
|
On the western side of the lake, to north of Verbania, there is Ghiffa, famous town because on its territory is located a Sacro Monte (Sacred Mountain). The words Sacro Monte usually refer to a devotional complex standing on the slopes of a mountain, with a series of chapels containing scenes from the life of Christ, the Virgin Mary or the Saints, in the form of painting or sculptures. The Sacred Mountains stand on high ground, at some distance from the town centre, in a more natural setting. They are usually reached by pilgrimage.
Inside of a Natural Reserve, like a jewel in the landscape of lake and woods, the baroque monumental complex of the Sacro Monte of Ghiffa, dedicated to the mystery of the Trinity; it comprises the Sanctuary, three chapels and the porch with the Stations of the Cross; the complex is located in a splendid panoramic position with a wonderful view on Lake Maggiore.
