The Last Supper
|
The Last Supper (called also the Cenacolo) is a fresco by Leonardo da Vinci, located in the refectory of the convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie; Leonardo started the work in 1495 and finished it in 1498. But as soon as he finished the painting, Leonardo noticed that the experimental technique he used was not good: it was the beginning of a disintegration process that continued in the course of the centuries; the masterpiece was restored many times, in order to save it.
Besides the damages of time this work endured many mistreatments: the refectory was transformed in bivouac by Napoleon's soldiers, then was bombed during the Second World War.
Today we can admire this work, that represents one of the most dramatic moments in the Gospel of John: when, during the last supper, Jesus announces that one of his Twelve Apostles would betray him. The scene is filled with the contrasting emotions of the different characters and illuminated by the windows behind Christ.
Because of its fragility and importance, the visits to The Last Supper are restricted and to admire it you must apply for a reservation, calling the number (0039) 02.928.003.60.
