Sirmione
|
Sirmione, whose name derives from “syrma”, that is “tail, trail”, developes on a thin peninsula that extends for 4 km in the heart of the lake Garda, whose natural features represent reason of admiration and renown since the antiquity.
Catullo defined it “apple of all the peninsulas”, and still today Sirmione is famous because of its privileged position; the town is watched over by a mighty stronghold of the Della Scala family, erected in 1259, strategically placed on the only way to the mainland. The castle of Sirmione is one of the most complete and better conserved in Italy.
The peninsula is characterized by the presence of three heights: the eastern one, called Cortine, the western one, Mavino, and the northern one, that takes the name from the spectacular Roman settlement known as Grotte di Catullo. In spite of the hypothesis that says the ruins of the imposing roman villa belonged to the dwelling of the celebrated Latin poet, sure proof for this theory do not exist.
The archaeological park, than extends on an area of more than 20,000 mq, is dipped in a luxuriant oliveyard and boasts one extraordinary view on the lake. The diggings have carrrevealed a porch, an heated swimming pool and a corridor, at the end of which there is the so-called 'trifora (three-light window) of the Paradise'. Inside a small museum keeps fragments of frescoes, jewels, ceramics, coins.
Nearly every place, in Sirmione, keeps traces of the roman age; in Mavino there is the evocative church of San Pietro, dipped in the green of the olive trees. The church rises on an ancient pagan temple, it was built up in the VIII century but the bell tower, Romanesque, is surly posterior. In 1320 the church was restored and the inner walls were completed with a cycle of frescoes.
