Cathedral of San Lorenzo
|
The church of San Lorenzo is the cathedral of Genoa; it has been consecrated in 1118, when still it was not completed and there was not the facade. It is a medieval church built between the 1100 and the end of the 14th century; the original plan said it must had two bell towers, but the left tower was not finished, and on its place there is now a porch, built in 1427. Inside, the church has three naves, divided by columns: the capitals of the columns are dated to the beginning of the 14th century; valuable works are conserved here. In the right nave there is a grenade that on 9 February 1941 hit the church, during a english bombing of the city, but it destroyed the roof without exploding. To right of one of the two doors of the cathedral (the nearest to via San Lorenzo) there is a figure of a little sleeping dog: this figure has given beginning to a legend, according to which the sculptor had lost his dog, and carved a small reproduction of it on the church in order to always remember it.
