Naples Royal Palace
|
The Royal Palace (Palazzo Reale) of Naples is one of the royal residences (among which there are also the Palace of Capodimonte and the Palace of Caserta) used by the monarchs during the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies (1816-1860).
Of remarkable dimensions, the palace is majestic and it is now on the Piazza del Plebiscito; it was built in 1600 and in 1888 the external niches were occupied by the gigantic statues of the king of Naples.
Entering it you are in the courtyard where there is a nineteenth-century fountain with the statue of the Fortune. Through the monumental and luminous Staircase, decorated wuth white and rose marbles, military trophies and allegorical sculptures, you enter in the rooms of the Palace: some are the same as they were when the King lived here. The eastern area of the Palace, instead, since 1922 accommodates the National Library; the palace endured serious damages during the war because of the bombings, but the most precious books were transferred till the reopening in 1945.
Annexed to the Palace it is also the area of the Royal Gardens, a beautiful park, rich of flowers and trees, adorned with sculptures.
