Chiavenna

Chiavenna is located in the center of the homonymous valley, where it divides in Valle di Sain Giacomo and Val Bregaglia.
Taking a walk along the ways of the center, the rich past of the city can be seen: palaces with decorated facades, small squares with splendid fountains and exceptional monuments like the Collegiata di San Lorenzo, a complex dated back to the 5th century, comprising the church, the baptistry, a cloister with the bell tower and the Museum of the Treasure, where the famous Pace di Chiavenna can be admired, one of the most important pieces of medieval silvervare of Europe: it is a cover for the Gospel, in gold and gems.
The center of Chiavenna, during the summery months, is characterized by flowers and small tables: here you can stop to relax and taste the food specialties of the valley; moreover, from Chiavenna start beautiful paths dipped in the nature, that lead to the natural monument of the Acquafraggia Waterfalls, and in the Park of the Marmitte dei Giganti.
Moreover, since 1956, in September Chiavenna organises the famous Sagra dei Crotti: this festival has an enormous success: it attracts every year approximately 30.000 persons, that reach Chiavenna in order to taste the typical local products and the famous of the valley.
