The palaces of the Rolli
|
The Rolli di Genova - or, better, Rolli of the ospitality - were, at the time of the old Republic of Genoa, the lists of the palaces and dwellings of the noble families that can accommodate the high personalities that came to Genoa. The Rolli are the most prestigious palaces of the Genoa historical center, especially along the ancient Strade Nuove; 42 of the 80 palaces enrolled to the Rolli of Genoa have been inserted in the list of the World Heritage. The rolli were constituted from 1576: the dwellings enrolled in the Rolli were divided in three categories in connection with the dimensions, the beauty and the importance, and were destined, basing on these criteria, to accommodate cardinals, princes and kings, ambassadors and governors. For each category there was a box with the names of the owners that were challenging to be the person who accomodates the personality. On 20 January 2007 the UNESCO has placed in beginning of via Garibaldi a plate that illustrates the motivations because the series of the Palaces of the Rolli and Strade Nuove - that is via Garibaldi and via Balbi - have been inserted between the World Heritage, that is the fact they are buildings that express the particular social identity of Genoa.
