San Marco Square
|
Piazza San Marco is the beating heart of Venice, the preferred destination of all tourists because of the unique and inimitable complex of monuments we can find here.
The square has a trapezoidal shape: it is 175 meters long and the largest side is 80 meters wide.
It is delimited by the Basilica of San Marco, by the palace of Procuratie Vecchie (Old Offices, rebuilt in the 16th century), by the Procuratie Nuove (New Offices, bilt at the end of 16th century) and by the palace joining the two Procuratie, built during Napoleonic age replacing the preexisting Church of San Gemignano. Under the arcades of Procuratie there are some old-age coffee shops, active since 18th century.
But what makes this Piazza really unique is most of all the opening towards the lagoon, between the high and impressive bell tower and the wonderful loggia of Palazzo Ducale. In the wide open space delimited by historical palaces, the tourists from all over the world take pictures submerged by the pigeons that crowd Venice.
Here there are also the spectacles of the Carnival, one of the most renowned in the world, and you can admire the most beautiful and rich masks and fancy dresses, inside a sparkling festival of colours where lives again the golden age of Venice, between 16th and 18th century.
